Salary: £28,000- 32,000 per annum, depending on experience
Hours: Full time, Monday- Friday 10am-6pm
Contract: Permanent position
Note: Some international travel may be required.

We are looking for an experienced journalist for a permanent position at The Calvert Journal, a thriving online magazine focused on the culture and creativity of modern Russia. The role is for Features Editor.
The company is based within Calvert 22 Foundation, a leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to the contemporary art and culture of Russia and Eastern Europe. A knowledge of Russian culture and language is not essential but a thorough understanding of main currents and issues in art and culture more generally is vital.

Main duties and responsibilities:
• Commissioning, editing and proofing content
• Generating feature ideas and news stories
• Writing features, news and other editorial copy
• Managing liaison with with freelance contributors and Journal editorial partners
• Managing daily content flow
• Contributing to development and implementation of social networking strategy
• Line management of members of the editorial team

Required skills:
• Exceptional organisational skills and an ability to manage the daily/ weekly/ monthly workflow
independently
• Excellent journalistic abilities in writing, editing and communication
• Experience of using an online content management system
• Excellent attention to detail (e.g. grammar, style, consistency)

Person Specification
• Minimum two years journalistic experience in a similar features role
• Engaging writing style and the ability to generate a constant flow of feature ideas
• Fast, efficient editor of copy with strong proof reading skills. Able to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, while meeting
deadlines
• Deep and demonstrable knowledge of contemporary culture including art and film to design,
literature and music
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with local and remote contributors
• Detail oriented
• Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
• Good commercial awareness
• Enthusiasm, drive and flexibility
• Ability to work as part of a team and on individual projects

Desirable, but not essential:
• Knowledge and insight into Russian contemporary culture
• Written or spoken Russian
• Knowledge of UK libel laws
• Understanding of a website statistics tool such as Google Analytics

Fluent spoken and written Russian and English is essential, as is an understanding of Russian and
Eastern European contemporary culture and a thorough understanding of main currents in art and
culture more generally.

Overview:
• Responsible for commissioning contributors and producing copy for the Comment
section – The Calvert Journal’s essay and analysis section – to a high standard.
• Ensure Comment pieces are produced on time and accurately translated and edited.
• Contribute to the overall strategy and development of The Calvert Journal, including
social media strategy.
• Contribute towards ensuring that The Calvert Journal as a whole is produced and
edited to a high standard.
• Communicate and contextualise the specifics of Russian and Eastern European
culture to the editorial team

Main Responsibilities:
• Develop network of international writers to contribute ideas and content for the
Comment section and communicate with authors in English and Russian
Ensure weekly flow of content — columns, think pieces and other opinion pieces — for
the Comment section.
• Write standfirsts, headlines and other copy for Comment pieces
• Work closely with the visual content team in developing and implementing the visual
aspects of Comment pieces.
• Maintain a knowledge of current Russian and Eastern European social, cultural and
political affairs
• Contribute to general discussions about the look and direction of the website,
including the development of content and ideas
• Contribute to the development and implementation of social media strategy,
including writing tweets and Facebook posts
• Support with developing and editing one-off special projects such as City Guides
• Proofread news articles and edit copy for features and other sections as required
• Read and evaluate pitches and articles written in Russian
• Occasional support in translation of internal communications
• Maintain a strong working relationship with other areas of Calvert 22 Foundation and
contribute ideas towards the overall strategy of the Foundation.

Essential skills:
